A busy month for Mora Award winners
Winners of the the Estela and Raúl Mora Award, recognized for past exemplary Día programs, have some wonderful things scheduled for this April.
Arizona State University, English Education Department, Tempe, AZ
The fifth annual Dí celebration will happen on May 11th, featuring eight authors and poets, many volunteers and sponsors from the community. Read our interview with them about their award-winning program.
Brownsville Independent School District, TX
This year’s Día celebration promises to be bigger and better than the inaugural celebration last year. All 37 Elementary campuses will be hosting events with over 6,700 early childhood students participating. The event is a collaborative effort between Library and Media Services, Bilingual Education, Special Services, and Federal Programs Departments in addition to Cameron County Head Start Programs. Each child enrolled in BISD’s three-year-old through kindergarten programs will be awarded a book by Dr. Maryann Cusimano Love, who will participate in several of the programs.
Farmington Public Library, NM
This year’s Día celebration will be the 19th! Día on April 30th is the kick-off event for the for the summer reading program that begins with visits from schools and organizations to the library. The library partners with the New Mexico State Library, Farmington Municipal Schools, REFORMA de Nuevo Mexico, and the Northwest New Mexico Arts Council for the celebration. Annually they obtain an official state-wide proclamation from the New Mexico Governor proclaiming April 30th as El día de los ninos, el día de los libros.
